Overheard

"Henry, stop that!"
(...)
"Henry, I said stop that! If you keep biting the toothbrush like that, I'm going to send you to bed with unbrushed teeth."
Henry, in dismay: "Ugh. How can I live with a daddy who's so sensitive?"

Purim!

Henry's first time in shul - Purim services at Tremont Street Shul in Cambridge. (And that's Esti under the shawl.)

I told him it was a holiday in honor of someone named Queen Esther. He said: "So, like, she was really famous and then she died and they made a holiday on her birthday?"

I had to explain that no, it didn't quite work like Martin Luther King Day.

But he got the part about wearing costumes. (His beautiful Chinese suit comes from our friend Rivi, who gave it to him as a baby gift three years ago. How nice that he finally has a chance to wear it!) And the noisemaking part was fun. No shortage of rattles at our house!

We don't know Hebrew and didn't know anyone there. The edition of the megilla they used (fortunately, I guess you could say) had no pictures. Henry lasted less than an hour before he started to fade, so we made an early exit. Esti I think would have stayed longer. Queen Esther. Even without a costume she was getting lots of smiles.

Fun all around. As Henry said: "Like Jewish Halloween, only without the candy."

Daughter swap

Sean, Gretchen, Veronica and Philip came over this afternoon.

Sean has a knack for making Esti laugh.

I think he likes little babies.

While Ken got to use his best dramatic intonation to read a dinosaur book to Veronica.

Back in Boston

In New York, borrowing Baby Daniel's bassinet.

Esti and I got back Monday night, and Ken immediately had to go do some event on campus while we went home with Henry. Teaching was kinda hairy Tuesday through Thursday, but it certainly wasn't the first time I was short on time to prepare. Anyway, it passed quickly. This whole semester is flying, even faster than spring usually does. Today, all the snow having missed Boston and landed on DC and NYC instead, we managed to get out for a walk.

Perhaps the massive backpack with awning is still overkill. Still, she's getting borderline big for the Bjorn.

Henry now enjoys posing for pictures sometimes -- can you tell?

Daniel's bris (cont'd)

David's father (actually an anaesthesiologist) continues calming the patient.

It's all done, just a few more lines to read afterwards.

Everyone seems to be fine. (Aren't they adorable?)

Sleeping it off...

Daniel's bris

Ebru's mom (who came from Turkey for an extended stay to help with the baby) prepares the patient with a nipple stuffed with gauze soaked in sweet wine.

David's dad flew in from Israel to meet his grandson.

Ebru, masking her anxiety by fussing over the ritual candles.

Nothing to worry about -- the mohel is actually a doctor, in fact an OB.

Ebru's baby

Daniel Eran London, born after 11pm on Valentine's Day. Esti and I went to NYC for the circumcision ceremony last weekend. Took the bus down on Sun, the train back on Mon.

It's fun to see Ebru as a mommy.

He is so tiny and cute.

Suddenly Esti looks gigantic!

Gender

According to the book shown in the background here,

girls with older brothers are more likely to prefer male-type toys than girls with in utero male-type hormonal exposure. Which should surprise no one.

I do wonder how this gender business will evolve as they get older. Will they get more into traditional roles to differentiate themselves from each other? Will Esti wear only pink (hard to avoid it when we have so many solid-though-pink hand-me-downs) but play with cars?

Will she have a mommy car, a daddy car, and a baby car? Will she want to feed the baby car and put it down for naps? I can't wait to find out.

Solid girl

Rice cereal, multigrain cereal, and now squash and once or twice avocado. Other ideas?

She is always hungry, and also perhaps teething. The other day she GRABBED a piece of toast I was eating while holding her and pulled it into her mouth.

More from Grandpa Valentin's birthday

Le'chaim!

Recall that Henry had made a birthday card using glitter pens and some random stickers. It was much appreciated.

Got him lots of cuddles from Grandpa Valentin and my aunt Irene.

She was in town from Israel for the party. Apparently there it's traditional to put sparklers on birthday cakes. Harder to blow out, but very... sparkly. Happy birthday, Grandpa!

Grandpa Valentin's birthday

This was Jan 31, celebrating his 85th birthday on Jan 25.

Esti's first time wearing a party dress, with ridiculous shoes as you can see. She hated them and yelled almost all the time until I took them off (smart girl).

Making the tour of the grandpas and grandmas.

Visiting with the birthday boy! (Note the happy toes.)
