"I usually catch it, normally."

After the show, we came home for pizza. It is so funny to watch Henry interact with Abi -- he has some clue about being a nice host and stuff ("Which yogurt do you want for snack, the strawberry, or the banana? ... Mommy, there's only one strawberry left, and Abi says she doesn't like yogurt, so I'm going to eat the strawberry.") but mainly he focuses on following and imitating every single thing she does and says.

You can imagine what immediately happens when Abi starts to show off her Italian-chef pizza-crust-stretching skills!

Big Nazo (3)

More from the post-show carnival. While Abi went for the silliest costumes and the greatest variety...

...including this full-body pig suit...

Henry practiced getting a grip on the giant green foam-rubber hand/claw.

Um, how do I wave hello with this thing?

More Big Nazo

Peek-a-boo!

Abi tries on a tall horse mask. (They're made of foam, literally stapled together, then sprayed with rubber and painted. Could be a fun project to try at home!)

Another crazy Abi costume.

Spiny fish!

Big Nazo

Yesterday Henry and I went with Abi and Mira to see a puppet group called Big Nazo perform at the DeCordova Museum. Abi bravely got herself called to the stage as one of just five or six kid volunteers, and got to dance around in oversized foam-rubber hands and a scary bug mask.

The show itself was pretty boring at times -- more tell than show. One wanted a bit more performance and less demonstration/discussion. But afterwards came the part all the kids were waiting for: a chance to try on the masks and costumes.

Henry went straight for this funny head with the bulgy eyes.

Hi, mom!

Breakfast for lunch

This was the day after a night when Henry fell asleep in the car coming home around 6pm and slept all through the night, missing dinner. So he had dinner (leftover ratatouille and pasta) for breakfast the next morning. Which left him with a strong inclination to eat breakfast for lunch.

And why not? Probably the lowest-cost sense of transgressiveness we'll ever experience. (I'm so glad he likes Raisin Bran.)

Happy birthday, Grandpa Valentin!

Last Sunday there was a family get-together in Brighton for my Grandpa Valentin's birthday. (And yesterday, another smaller one that happened to coincide with what he calls his "name day" -- St. Valentine's!)
Henry showed up on time (although asleep, having conked out in the car) and with a homemade card he had drawn. He then promptly started to look sick: sleepy, no appetite, cough, feverish red cheeks. He spent most of the dinner party lying listlessly on the couch in the sunroom. Wasn't even interested in the appetizer course despite his usual love for smoked salmon and sardines.

Still managed to be occasionally charming, but nothing like his usual irresistible self.

(My grandpa and his little sister, my great-aunt Anyuta.)

Need I add that Henry's "illness" lasted exactly 14 hours, just long enough to worry my older relatives? This kid is incredible. He came home early and cranky, kept us up most of the night because he kept waking up miserable, finally fell fast asleep when he crawled into our bed at 5 in the morning... and by 8am was pink-cheeked, laughing, joking, and ready to go to day care! Ken and I were near-zombies all day from lack of sleep (remind me again how people cope with newborns?), but Henry's day care teachers reported that he was totally fine. Oh well.

Blanket fort

Mira came over for Friday dinner with Abi, who introduced Henry to the complex art of building forts with pillows and blankets in the living room. Peek-a-boo!

Marblehead (outside)

We had actually never been to Marblehead in the daytime before. It was ridiculously cold, but we forced ourselves out for a walk after lunch. Cute town. Pretty pier, complete with seagulls.

Revolutionary War re-enactors. All carrying muskets but some not wearing gloves. (Are these people nuts? Why don't they re-enact it in April-June, when the weather is warmer?)

Quick! Get into the family photo before everyone's toes freeze off!

Marblehead

Last Saturday 1/31, we spent the afternoon at my Uncle Paul and Aunt Sophia's house in Marblehead. (Photos courtesy of Paul.)

A wild-animal puzzle. (Henry is actually getting pretty nimble at these things.)

Newspaper hat.

Would Aunt Sopha like to try?
