Table manners?

Henry has discovered frozen raspberries. He can eat any quantity of them in his oatmeal (or even plain - no oatmeal required).

But my God, who taught him to eat like this?? Surely not his impeccably-mannered Mommy and Daddy!

More kitchen activities

Henry enjoys hanging out in the kitchen, and he loves splashing around in warm water: any wonder that he is into washing dishes?

He can do this, seriously, for almost an hour. (Which is how long it takes when there's a sink full and you're trying to make sure he doesn't fall off the chair at the same time as wash them.)

Hopefully he will be deprived of this pleasure next year, as we really would like to move into a place in Boston that has a dishwasher!

Got juice

A photo from before spring break: Henry helping make carrot juice using the Champion juicer. He thought it was pretty great, even though it made a big loud noise. He narrated the whole thing in the third person ("Henry is making carrot juice. Henry is putting the carrot into the machine.") He drank some of the juice, too.

I should mention, for those amused by the superabundance of kitchen scenes on this blog of late, that Ken and I alternate between insane pride at our child's ridiculous linguistic and culinary achievements... and a fear that he will grow up to be some kind of cooking-show host. An acquaintance of ours - now an editor at the Times Literary Supplement, incidentally - hosted a few episodes of a cooking show on the local public-access cable station when he was, like, nine years old. Gack - could this be Henry's future, too? Our fears have subsided slightly since he has learned (over the past two weeks) to use the pronoun "I" and largely stopped referring to himself as "Henry." Still, I don't think I'm quite ready to calm down yet.
But what can we do? Spring is slow in coming this year. Try to take pix during a walk and your fingers freeze.

Easter eggs

While I stayed here to get some work done, Ken and Henry went to Madison for a week over Ken's Spring Break. Not the best arrangement! It was great for Henry to see his Grandpa Ken and Grandma Nancy and then his Grandma Ann and Grandpa Roger. But silly Mommy missed out on a lot of fun. Including Henry's first Easter-egg-dyeing project (nice photos from Ann):

You can tell he thinks this is a really neat experiment.

Green! (Nice eyelashes, kid.)

Spring cleaning

Henry is wearing his big truck pajamas. But is he planning to nap? No! Much more fun to help Mom and Dad with their (semi-annual) house cleaning. Today he helped wipe the refrigerator...

...mop the kitchen floor...

...and later (not shown) in lieu of a second nap-that-didn't-happen, helped Mommy wipe down the doors and baseboards in the bathroom. What a kid! This is after he spent part of the morning helping me make hummus in the "machine that makes noise" and then make pesto. He is a pro at pulling the little basil leaves off the stems, pretty damn accurately, while singing "The stems go in the compost... the worms eat the compost... the fish eat the worms... Henry eats the fish..." to the tune of "The Farmer in the Dell." The other day I asked him what comes after "Henry eats the fish" and he improvised: "Daddy loves Henry!"

He's 22 months tomorrow! The other thing I've taught him to do is sing, to the tune of "Di-di-aynu," when we wait for the little Walk signal and cross the street "Di-di-agonally." I love it when he does it, even though he doesn't know why it's funny.
