We were planning to sleep-train Henry this week, and dreading it. This is when you put the kid down and let him "cry it out" to teach him not to rely on parental help in falling asleep. Apparently it triggers some kind of neurological reflex and from then on your child can "self-soothe" without needing to be nursed or rocked -- some of our friends say their babies actually reach out for the crib and ask to be put down when they're tired (something no baby I know has ever done -- hell, I never did it myself till I started pulling all-nighters in college). But the process is supposed to be excruciating: hours of crying, several nights in a row.
Anyway, we started at 8pm on Sunday. To our amazement, Henry turned out to be sleep-trained already. He fussed quietly, almost conversationally, for about ten minutes, and then conked out. Same thing last night.
It turns out that he is a perfect baby in this respect as well. Our erratic "routine" of 6:45 bathtime and then nursing or dancing to sleep sometime between 7:15 and 9:30 had somehow given him the idea of falling asleep on his own. Of course he retains the right to make me take all this back later this evening (Ken is saying good night to him as I write).
And it gets better. This morning he got fussy at 9am so we tried putting him down (no rocking or anything) for a nap. A few minutes of complaint, then... he fell asleep and stayed out for two hours! (He took another 2-hour nap this afternoon. Normal for some babies but a veritable sleepathon for ours, unprecedented until last week he started taking these mega-naps on my parents' living room rug.)
